Gardeners Gants Hill Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Gants Hill is committed to providing professional gardening and grounds care services in a way that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, subcontractors, clients, visitors and members of the public. This Health and Safety policy outlines our approach to managing risks associated with gardening, landscaping and maintenance activities, and sets out the responsibilities and procedures that support safe working practices.
Policy Statement and Objectives
Our objective is to prevent accidents, injuries, ill health and damage to property or the environment arising from our work. We will achieve this by identifying hazards, assessing and controlling risks, providing appropriate training and equipment, and continuously improving our safety performance.
This policy applies to all work undertaken by Gardeners Gants Hill, including but not limited to lawn care, hedge trimming, planting, pruning, soft landscaping, garden clearance and routine maintenance services throughout our service area.
Management Responsibilities
Management at Gardeners Gants Hill accepts overall responsibility for health and safety. Management will:
Ensure that suitable arrangements are in place for the planning, organisation, control, monitoring and review of health and safety across all gardening tasks.
Provide and maintain safe equipment, tools and machinery, including regular inspection, servicing and replacement where necessary.
Ensure that employees receive adequate information, instruction, supervision and training relevant to their roles and the risks they may encounter.
Promote a culture where health and safety is considered an integral part of all decision-making and day-to-day operations.
Review this policy regularly and revise it as necessary to reflect changes in legislation, working practices or company structure.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee and subcontractor working for Gardeners Gants Hill has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their work. All personnel are required to:
Follow the company’s safe working procedures and instructions at all times.
Use equipment, tools, machinery, personal protective equipment and materials only as trained and instructed, and report any defects or concerns immediately.
Maintain good housekeeping on site, keeping work areas tidy and free from unnecessary risks such as trailing hoses, sharp tools left unattended or waste build-up.
Report all accidents, incidents, near misses and hazards to management without delay so that corrective action can be taken.
Cooperate with any health and safety investigations, audits or reviews undertaken by the company.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Gardeners Gants Hill will carry out suitable and proportionate risk assessments for gardening and landscaping activities, including the use of power tools, working at height, manual handling, use of hazardous substances, use of ladders, working near roads or pathways and work in clients’ gardens and shared outdoor spaces.
Based on these risk assessments, we will implement safe systems of work designed to eliminate or minimise risks. These may include specific methods for handling heavy materials such as soil, compost and paving, controlled use of powered cutters and trimmers, safe procedures for hedge and tree work and clear arrangements for traffic and pedestrian management when working near access routes.
Training, Information and Supervision
We recognise that competent people are essential to safe working. Gardeners Gants Hill will:
Provide induction training for new staff, covering company rules, emergency procedures, incident reporting and correct use of gardening equipment.
Deliver task-specific training on machinery such as lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws where applicable, blowers and other powered equipment, supported by manufacturer instructions.
Provide ongoing refresher training where appropriate to maintain safe standards of work.
Ensure appropriate levels of supervision, especially for new or inexperienced staff, and for higher-risk activities such as work at height or use of hazardous substances.
Equipment, Personal Protective Equipment and Substances
All tools, machinery and gardening equipment used by Gardeners Gants Hill will be selected, used and maintained with safety in mind. Regular checks will be carried out and any defective equipment removed from service until repaired or replaced.
Where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means, suitable personal protective equipment will be provided, such as gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, high-visibility clothing and respiratory protection where required. Employees must use and look after any PPE issued, and report loss or damage immediately.
Where fertilisers, weed control products, fuels or other chemicals are used, we will follow product safety data and guidance. Substances will be stored, handled, mixed and applied in a way that minimises risk to people, pets, plants and the wider environment.
Protecting Clients, the Public and the Environment
Gardeners Gants Hill takes seriously its duty to protect clients, visitors and the general public while work is carried out. Measures may include signage or barriers where necessary, careful positioning of vehicles and equipment, and scheduling of works to minimise disruption and risk.
We will manage noise, dust, vibration and waste from gardening activities responsibly. Green waste, soil and other materials will be handled and disposed of in a safe and environmentally responsible manner, in line with good practice and applicable requirements.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, near misses, property damage and safety concerns must be reported as soon as possible to management. Records of incidents will be maintained to help identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
Appropriate first aid arrangements will be in place for teams working on site. Employees will be briefed on emergency procedures, including how to summon assistance, how to respond to injuries or sudden illness and how to manage fire or other serious incidents involving vehicles, tools or stored materials.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
Gardeners Gants Hill will monitor health and safety performance through site inspections, discussions with staff, review of incident reports and feedback from clients. Where weaknesses or concerns are identified, we will take prompt corrective action.
This Health and Safety policy will be reviewed regularly and updated whenever there are significant changes in our work activities, equipment or applicable requirements. We are committed to continual improvement in our health and safety management, with the aim of maintaining a safe working environment for everyone involved in or affected by our gardening services.
